The 49ers added some much-needed help at guard on Tuesday, signing Jonathan Cooper to a one-year deal. Cooper is the former No. 7 overall pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2013 draft. From a scheme standpoint, Cooper makes sense in coach Kyle Shanahan's outside zone scheme because of his athleticism. GM John Lynch on Cooper: “Having started 27 games in four NFL seasons, Jonathan brings great experience to the interior of our offensive line,” Lynch said. “We look forward to him competing for a starting job at guard, while also bringing a veteran presence to our locker room. Jonathan is a welcome addition to our team.” Cooper will be expected to compete with the likes of Joshua Garnett, Laken Tomlinson and Erik Magnuson for two guard spots.

The full Richard Sherman quote on S Eric Reid remaining unsigned in free agency: "We are concerned because he played at a high level just about every year that he's played in this league," Sherman said. "He's made enough plays to be signed with a team and to make his money. He deserves his money. If safeties make a certain amount, I would think he's top five, top 10 safeties in this league so he deserves to be paid accordingly. So there is concern there because you would think a player of his caliber and his quality would be picked up by now. Great teams are still looking and people are still looking for players and I'm praying that he gets picked up but if he doesn't then I think there would be a conversation between the league office and the union on potential legal action."

On safety Eric Reid being unsigned at this point, 49ers CB Richard Sherman said "we are concerned (about it). He's made enough plays in this league to be signed with a team and get his money." Sherman said he'd be interested in being the Niners team union rep and indicated that if Reid doesn't get signed, there would need to be legal conversations with the league about it.
