Travel distances can have a slight effect on team fortunes. This season, Oakland, Seattle, and the Chargers each travel about 30,000 round trip miles. At the other end of the spectrum are Carolina, Atlanta, Cincinnati, and the Jets who each travel fewer than 10,000 miles.

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff tells the story of eating pancakes at the Waffle House while meeting with a draft prospect last season. Problem is, Waffle House doesn't have pancakes. So, he brought his own. Or that's how the tale was told.

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff on the team's draft position. ``There are a number of positions that we're looking at more than other years. I feel like in other years, we've been really honed in on potentially one or two, and we have a number of positions that we think can really benefit us at 26. ... In our minds, it gives us an opportunity to consider -- of course, we'll always consider moving up -- but also the idea of moving back as well because we feel there are a number of good players at 26 and beyond.'' The Falcons traded up for defensive end Takk McKinley at No. 26 last season.''

WR Julio Jones and C Alex Mack are not participating in the start of the Falcons' voluntary offseason program this week. ``We knew they weren't going to be here this week,'' coach Dan Quinn said. ``Of course, it's not mandatory, but we knew they weren't going to be here.'' Jones has the grand opening of his Kia and Mazda car dealerships in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he went to college.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. says on conference call the Falcons should consider either Alabama's Calvin Ridley or Maryland's D.J. Moore at receiver with the No. 26 pick. Ridley (6-0, 189) ran a 4.43 in the 40, Moore (6-0, 210) ran a 4.42. Falcons need more speed at receiver.

Along with signing DT Garrison Smith, who last played with the Seahawks, Falcons also announced the signings of DT Justin Zimmer and DB Tyson Graham. Zimmer spent time with the Saints last year during training camp and was with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes. Graham signed with the Colts last season as an undrafted player out of South Dakota.

Falcons are signing former Seahawks DT Garrison Smith, according to agent David Canter. One-year deal worth the minimum. Smith from Atlanta and the University of Georgia. Could bring depth on the interior. Falcons still looking for playmaking DT in draft.

Falcons WR Mohamed Sanu talks about developing consistency as an offense and speaks on the value of having a healthy Julio Jones around this offseason.

Falcons Pro Bowl LB Deion Jones told me he weighs about 220 pounds right now. He plans to play at 230, 235 during the 2018 season. ``I was, for the most part, 228, 230 last season. Now it's just a matter of holding it consistently,'' Jones said. He has ``a plan'' for putting on 10-15 pounds before the start of the season.

WR Julio Jones wasn't immediately visible during the media-viewing portion of today's offseason workouts. QB Matt Ryan was with the group while awaiting a contract extension, while FS Ricardo Allen also participated despite not yet signing his RFA tender. RB Devonta Freeman (knee), WR Justin Hardy (shoulder), and WR Mohamed Sanu (undisclosed) appeared to be in a group of players rehabbing on a side field. The group on the field did not include offensive or defensive linemen or linebackers.

Falcons bringing Sam Houston State DT P.J. Hall in for a visit tonight. He went through a private workout with coach Dan Quinn and defensive line coach Bryant Young over the weekend, as the school posted on its official website. Hall (6-1, 310), who has drawn comparisons to Falcons standout Grady Jarrett, had 42 sacks and 86.5 tackles for losses in 56 career college games. Hall opened eyes at his pro day and is projected by some to be a second day draft selection.

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Falcons FS Ricardo Allen is at the facility for the start of the offseason program today but hasn't signed his restricted free agent tender ($2.914 million). Allen signed an injury waiver instead to proceed with workouts and be with his teammates. Unclear when he'll sign the tender but he could receive a long-term deal sometime after the Falcons reach an extension with QB Matt Ryan.
