Here's what Nelson Cruz said to me on whether he was disappointed Jean Segura wasn't named MVP: "Yes. I was hoping he'd win it. Unfortunately it didn't happen, but he had a great performance and I'm definitely happy to have been part of such a beautiful experience."

Nice quote from Edwin Díaz last night when he talked to me in Spanish about blowing the save, but ironically, getting the win in the All-Star Game: "It's all about J.A. Happ. He's been in the league what, 12-13 years? And he goes in and gets his first career-save? He should've gotten the win. I am just so happy for him."

Edwin Diaz leads the majors with 36 saves, a huge season the Mariners are sitting in a playoff position. In fact, the Mariners describe their game plan as "Get the ball to Eddie." So of course Scooter Gennett hits a game-tying home run off him in the bottom of the ninth, joining Fred McGriff and Ralph Kiner with game-tying homers in the ninth, and we go to extras.

Boom! Jean Segura was the Final Vote selection for the AL and now the Mariners shortstop tags the almost unhittable Josh Hader with a three-run homer to give the AL a 5-2 lead ... moments after Joey Votto couldn't corral his foul pop along the dugout railing. Segura could follow on the heels of Robinson Cano last year to give the Mariners back-to-back All-Star MVPs.

Oh, and just like that the A's have cut the Mariners' lead for the second wild card to 3 games as the Mariners lose four in a row before the break. The A's were 11 games back of Seattle on June 15, but went 21-6 since then to climb back into the playoff race.
