Skaggs dazzles, Angels beat Astros 2-0

Yuli Gurriel was thrown out at third base by catcher Martin Maldonado to end the game after an original safe call was reversed on replay, giving the Los Angeles Angels a 2-0 win over Houston on Monday night that ended the Astros' six-game winning streak.

Japanese two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani, who threw a 37-pitch bullpen yesterday to test a blister on his right middle finger, stretched and played catch in the outfield at Minute Maid Park. Ohtani is slated to start vs. the Astros tomorrow in the second of 19 games between the AL West rivals.

Over the course of the long baseball season, in any given series even a good team can look over-matched. The White Sox do not look like a good team by any measure right now, and they certainly looked over-matched this weekend against the champion Astros. Houston completed a three-game sweep on Sunday with a 7-1 win. The Astros outscored Chicago 27-2 in the series. On the bright side, the White Sox avoided becoming the first team since 1929 to allow double-digit runs in five straight games. The Astros will now return home for a big series against the Los Angeles Angels.

The White Sox have now allowed 10 or more runs in four straight games. According to ESPN Stats & Info, that ties the longest such streak in franchise history. If the streak reaches five on Sunday -- a definite possibility with the way Houston has been swinging the bats this weekend -- it would be the fifth time a team has given up five straight games of double-digit runs. The last team do it was the Philadelphia Phillies -- in 1929.

After surrendering 20 unanswered runs to start their series against the Astros, the White Sox are finally on the board thanks to their newest acquisition, OF Trayce Thompson. Thompson homered to right off Dallas Keuchel to give the home fans something to finally cheer about after Houston had built a 10-0 lead. Thompson, in his second stint with Chicago, has been with four organizations in the last month.

As if the White Sox weren't already dealing with heavy hearts, then they have to go out and play the Houston Astros. The results have not been pretty so far in this series for Chicago. Josh Reddick just launched his seventh career grand slam to put Houston up 8-0. We've played 10 1/2 innings so far this series, and Houston has outscored Chicago 18-0.

So Justin Verlander didn't like Tim Anderson celebrating after a steal attempt on a 3-0 count on Friday? Verlander got the last laugh, picking Anderson off and enjoyed it too. We should want more of this: Players living in the moment, less mechanical obedience to the 'unwritten rules.'

The Blue Jays will reportedly call up Cuban prospect Lourdes Gurriel Jr. today. He is the youngest brother of Astros infielder Yulieski Gurriel and son of legendary Cuban baseball player Lourdes Gurriel. Here are the Gurriel brothers with their father when the Astros won the World Series.
