Stanford coach David Shaw learned Saturday morning that running back Bryce Love wouldn't play against Utah. Love was sore after some moderately strenuous workouts. Shaw expects Love back after the open week against Arizona State.

Stanford coach David Shaw on the inevitable calls for him to throw the ball more with the run game struggling. "Those people don't know me. Those people don't understand this program. Those people don't understand what it takes to get where we are. It's a proven philosophy."

A big night for Utah's starting backfield of quarterback Tyler Huntley (17 of 21 passing, 199 yards, 1 TD) and running back Zack Moss (160 rush yards, 2 TDs). The Utes are always good enough on defense and special teams, as they showed Saturday night at Stanford. But if the offense takes off, Utah will be a factor in the Pac-12 South.

Utah delivers a dominant 40-21 win over No. 14 Stanford by controlling the line of scrimmage, causing havoc on defense and executing a balanced offensive attack. Kyle Whittingham's team really needed this after losing to the Washington schools and remains alive in the South division. Stanford enters the open week reeling after consecutive blowout losses.

Utah QB avoids sack then finds WR for TD (0:49)

A strong third quarter for K.J. Costello and Stanford, which outscored Utah 14-3 to cut the Utes' lead to 27-21. Costello is settling in and finding open targets in a vertical passing game, and junior Trevor Speights, getting the bulk of carries with Bryce Love out, is finding a bit of running room. It's important for the Stanford defense to hold Utah to field goals or nothing the rest of the way as the Utes begin the fourth quarter in Stanford territory.

Utah leads No. 14 Stanford 24-7 at halftime after answering the Cardinal's first score with a quick drive into field-goal range. Stanford actually leads in total yards 210-207, but two red-zone failures really cost the Cardinal, whose issues along the defensive line are showing up again against bruising Utes running back Zack Moss (9 carries, 76 yards, 2 TDs). Playing without Bryce Love, Stanford has just 23 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Stanford RB powers his way into the end zone for TD (0:39)

A week after falling at Notre Dame, No. 14 Stanford is in big trouble tonight against Utah. The Bryce Love-less Cardinal trail 14-0 after Utah cornerback Jaylon Johnson returned an interception 100 yards to the end zone. Just a terrible read by Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello after the team's first promising drive of the game. Stanford has won five of its past six regular-season games when its opponent scores first.

Former Oregon State, Wisconsin and Utah State coach Gary Andersen, now a Utah assistant, warms up the Utes' defensive linemen to take on Stanford.

Stanford star running back Bryce Love not in uniform tonight as the 14th-ranked Cardinal host Utah. Love injured his ankle in last week's loss to Notre Dame.

Stanford's loss to Notre Dame hurt the Pac-12's already slim chance to send a team to the playoff.

Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

Obviously, Ohio State and Notre Dame were the two biggest gainers in playoff chance after last night. Though Penn State's chances took a big hit, the Nittany Lions are certainly still alive in the playoff race.

Ivan Maisel ESPN Senior Writer

How big is this Notre Dame performance tonight? Forget ending the three-game losing streak to Stanford — Irish haven't beaten Stanford by more than 7 points since 2006, the year before Jim Harbaugh arrived to drag the Cardinal out of the ditch.

Ivan Maisel ESPN Senior Writer

Best news for Notre Dame today after its dominating performance is the way that Syracuse played. Rest of Irish schedule doesn't look strong enough to sway playoff committee. Need the Orange to stay relevant.
